Eagles egress

A taut , Bergman-esque psycho-drama.

A resolute team performance from Colebridge Eagles saw them narrowly edge Bournville in a closely contested match at their Shirley stronghold last night.

Individual honours of the evening belong to Bournvilles’ Martin George , whose claim to the Div Two individual title was strengthened by an emphatic hat trick , although he dropped sets along the way, none of the Eagles could master his eclectic mix of spin serves ,consistent forehand topspins and astute footwork.

An extraordinary doubles match , which produced table tennis worthy of a rarefied echelon , went the way of the Eagles , including a remarkable first set , which Eagles won 21-19.

Dean Hicks and Bernard Oliver led the way individually , as well as in their doubles partnership , with two wins apiece for The Eagles , and Mike Evetts , in a taut Bergman-esque psychodrama , provided the denouement of the evening with a victory over the luckless Martin Clayton , to ensure a narrow 6-4 victory.

As ever , thanks to the recovering Pat Oliver for her sterling work in Colebridges’ charmingly appointed refreshment facility and also to Martin Clayton , who provided chocolate treats sourced from their Bournville base , for the spectating Hicks daughters , who were impeccably behaved throughout the evening , and cheered their Dad to victory.
